We offer a great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. Our classes are taught by Bruce Hoyer, a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Rodrigo Medeiros and a two-time World Championship Medalist in the Gi at Purple Belt and Blue Belt, and a No-Gi World Champion at Purple Belt as well. He has competed in over 90 tournaments and has been medaled in over 100 divisions — currently Bruce is the highest ranking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts in South Dakota. (Fun fact: the 2nd highest ranking one also teaches at Next Edge Academy.)

Our program is designed to make you excel in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We combine general instructional classes with personalized training, goal setting and video analysis — all to make you the best possible grappler.

Common questions

I've never trained before — will I be totally lost?
No. Regular classes always start with warm-ups and technique, and coaches pair you with helpful training partners. If you'd like a more structured on-ramp, our 6-week Beginner BJJ Course is built specifically for first-timers.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing with no zippers, buttons or pockets — think shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. We have loaner gis if you don't own one yet.
Do I need a gi to start?
Not on day one. We have loaner gis on-site. If you decide to stick with it, we'll help you pick the right size — see our equipment guide for details.
Is BJJ safe? Am I going to get injured?
BJJ is one of the safer combat sports because it's built around leverage and controlled positions rather than strikes. We drill with control and only sparring partners you're comfortable with. Injuries happen in any sport, but our coaching prioritizes safety.
How often should I train?
Two to three times per week is a great starting point. Consistency beats intensity — students who show up regularly progress the fastest.
How does belt promotion work?
Promotions come from a combination of time on the mats, technical understanding, and how you perform in class. There's no set schedule — your coaches will tell you when you're ready.
