Do I need to be strong, flexible and in good shape?

Our typical age is around 22, however we have students from 5 to 60.

Typically about 10 years. Black belts aren't awarded until the student is 18 years old.
Are the classes good exercise?
  • Boxing — Yes. Roughly 30 minutes of pad rounds and 30 minutes of holding. You can make it as easy or as hard as you want.
  • BJJ — The instruction portion isn't very difficult; the intense workout comes once you start rolling.
What is the best place to purchase a gi?
You can purchase a Sanabul gi through Amazon — great quality for about $75. Most people at the gym have them. We also keep some available at the gym for $75.
Do I need any protective equipment?
You can wear a cup if you'd like, but most people don't. A mouthguard is a necessity. For boxing we suggest headgear only if you plan on competing. For kickboxing you'll need a mouthguard and shin guards.
How often should I train, as a beginner?
We always suggest 2x a week for the first 2 months, then go up from there. This gives the body time to adjust to the new workouts.
Will martial arts teach my child to resort to violence?
We focus on teaching sport jiu-jitsu to kids for competition, which also helps with self-defense outside the gym. Kids are regularly reminded they can only use it in a gym setting unless they need to defend themselves.
Does my child run the risk of injury at your facility?
There's always some risk of injury, but our staff works hard to prevent it. As of right now we have had no major injuries in the kids class.
Will my child have fun, or is it strict and overly structured?
Our kids BJJ class is structured, but the environment is less strict than traditional martial arts.
Is the gym beneficial for women?
Of course — great exercise, great self-defense, and about 35% of our clients are women.
What is a gi and why do I have to wear one?
The gi is a traditional outfit worn in many martial arts. For BJJ it's a thicker material that allows you to grab. At our gym you're not required to wear one, but we highly suggest it — it lets you slow the training down and learn without relying on strength and speed.
Is there any way I can try a class before signing up?
For sure — the initial week is free!
