What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling, take-downs, and most importantly ground fighting. It originated from the Japanese fighting style of Judo and was refined in Brazil through Helio Gracie (father of BJJ). It's a growing sport that is gaining traction internationally in part through the UFC. Here are five of the top reasons your kids should train BJJ.
Health
In 2012 the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that 33% of American children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Studies show that exposing kids early to sports like BJJ makes them more likely to maintain healthier lifestyles throughout life. BJJ is also known as an excellent way to build strong bones and muscles.
Note: Before signing up for BJJ, please check with your pediatrician to confirm your child is cleared to train.
Improved grades
Psychology Today has highlighted a direct correlation between sports and improved cognitive intelligence. BJJ is a great form of aerobic activity that helps promote Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factors (BDNF) — a chemical that supports new-neuron growth and may improve concentration, focus and school performance, and can aid children who struggle with ADHD.
Self-defense
The ability to defend oneself is a valuable skill every child should learn. BJJ gives your child those tools while promoting respect and discipline — many instructors teach students to never use what they learn outside class unless absolutely necessary.
Leadership and goal-drive
BJJ practitioners are separated by ranks — white belts being beginners and black belts having the highest experience. Rank is earned through a combination of tournament performance and time on the mats, and promotions are celebrated. This environment encourages kids to strive toward goals, building a goal-driven mindset that carries into school, career, and beyond.
Self-esteem through friendship
How we feel drives how we behave, and low self-esteem is linked with risky behavior. BJJ builds a strong sense of self through meaningful and lasting friendships that you gain training together on the mats. Consider learning alongside your child — it's a great shared interest to bond over.

Common questions
- What ages do you take?
- Kids BJJ is for ages 6–12. Teens 13+ train in our adult BJJ classes with age-appropriate pairing.
- My child has never done martial arts — is that okay?
- Yes. Most of our kids start with zero experience. Coaches meet each child where they are and build fundamentals in a positive, structured environment.
- What should my child wear to their first class?
- Athletic clothes with no zippers or buttons — shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. We have loaner gis available.
- Do you require a gi?
- We recommend a gi once your child decides to stick with it. Our equipment guide has kids sizing information.
- Is it safe?
- BJJ is one of the safer martial arts for kids because it's built on leverage and controlled positioning — no striking. Coaches supervise every partner drill.
- How do belt promotions work for kids?
- We follow the IBJJF kids belt system with age-appropriate belts and stripes. Promotions are based on time on the mats, attitude, and technical growth.
- Will BJJ make my child aggressive?
- The opposite — kids who train BJJ consistently show more discipline, patience, and self-control. We teach that these skills are for the mats and for self-defense, not for the playground.
